Living The Exchanged Life
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
My friend what is this Christian life truly? Is it one in which progressively, over a long drawn out period of time, the sin-sick you becomes healthier and godlier through the exercise of certain principles and practices? Is it that you, child of God, once a filthy sinner, are now becoming less filthy by behavior management and a series of attitude adjustments? No beloved, praise God it is not.
The Christian life is not about becoming a better you or becoming morally acceptable before God in your behavior and attitudes; rather it is the end of your prior existence and the beginning of a completely new existence (2 Cor 5:17). You have entered a heavenly existence in which your life is hidden, tucked safely and snuggly into the heart of our mighty God and lover. The Christian life is a life where Christ has taken your life and He lives through you!
“It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me.” That infernal I, that pesky, wretched, failing, broken mess of human life that was once you and me is no longer alive! Praise God! That monster was stapled to a tree two thousand years ago and he has breathed His last (Rom 6:3-4). Now a new man stands in place of the old. This new man is one in which Christ is its source: It’s all and all. Now my friend if you are in Christ you too can say with the apostle that it is no longer you who live but indeed Christ who lives in you!
This is incredible news my friend! How many times have I mourned over my failures and shortcomings when the answer was not that I become better, more holy, adjust my behavior, or correct my perverse attitude; rather it was to realize that I have died and now there is Another whose life is to manifest from within me. The life I have in Christ is not a refurbished one, but an exchanged one! Mine for His! Praise God! Now I can rest and allow Him to steer this ship, and to be honest He is a much better driver then I could’ve ever be!
