The Big Picture
The Lord appeared to me from ages past, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you.”
For years I have contemplated Christianity in an attempt to distill it into a simple working definition that would capture what has, in times past, appeared to me to be a rather confusing chaotic stream of disassociated ideas, denominations, doctrines, movements, actions, and beliefs that, to both lesser and greater degrees, can at times be somewhat illumined by the brilliance of the eternal word of God.
I found I was overwhelmed and overcome; in a state of spiritual inebriation from what appeared to be a bootlegged faith, shaken and diluted with the flesh of men, and poured through the strainer of religion, served straight up and beautifully garnished with a tiny Japanese umbrella. It looked great! But left me with a splitting headache, a vomit covered t-shirt, and a pile of regrets and condemnation.
What is this thing we call Christianity? What is it all about? Have you found yourself asking these same questions?
Well I would argue, my friends, that truly Christianity can be boiled down to simply and purely being loved by God unconditionally as His very own son or daughter. At the end of the day, God has loved us with an unfailing and everlasting love! And from this love He has drawn us to Himself. His love is unilateral, flowing in one direction, from Him to you! His love is completely free from the influence of your behavior, whether good or bad; free from the influence of your obedience, whether it be consistent or non-existent; free from anything you could ever do or not do! It is unmerited and pure. Extending from His essence and nature (Rom 5:8).
God is not the one shoveling expectations down your throat or commanding you to do this or that. No! Beloved, Jesus finished His work so that absolutely nothing would stand between you and Him! Sin has been crushed forever, death has become a doorway into His eternal embrace, and satan has been castrated. In fact, God grabbed the veil that kept you from Him and through the victory at Calvary, tore it from top to bottom. He then scooped you up into His arms and began to smother you with kisses and hugs, while singing songs of joy, freedom, and salvation over you! You are His. End of story!
God is not looking for superstars to change the earth! He is looking for a ragtag bunch of failures and rejects who recognize the depth of their poverty without Him, and have the balls to rest in Christ alone in simple trust, wearing His righteousness as their own, and allowing Him to be their life! He is true bread and true drink (Jn 6:55). In other words God wants you, and He wants to live through you! He wants you ignited by the fire of His love and reaching out to the world around you, allowing His love and relentless kindness to drown out every cry, to fill every crack, and to heal every wound.
Christianity is truly and solely about a God who is bent on loving you no matter what! A God who spared not His Son, but delivered Him up for you, and with Him will freely give you all things (Rom 8:32)!
God expects nothing from us and provides all for us: This is called grace. And our natural response to such overwhelming goodness is to abandon everything in reckless trust clinging lovingly to the most tender Being in the universe: This is called faith (Eph 2:8-9).
Beloved, consider this an intervention. I, as your friend, am urging you to kick the diluted perversion of mainstream contemporary Christianity, and taste and see that The Lord is super good (Ps 34:8)! God gets more glory and honor when you simply live as a son or daughter, real and transparent, in a true and living relationship with Him than he does from anything else! Let go of all your striving, trying, working, fasting, moving and acting! He already loves you, He chose you before the world was framed, and He died to prove His devotion to you! Rest now, my love, in His perfect love and grace and let Him carry you from now on! I dare you to stop. Take a breath. And let Him love you. Right now. Where you are. As you are.
