Personal Upgrade In Your Relationship With God
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Beloved, how do you look at difficulties, weaknesses, habitual sins, failure, and adversity in your life? Do you see them as a hindrance to you, keeping you just out of reach of the love and care of God in fullness? Do you see them as walls that you must scale in order to become who you “ought” to be? How do you respond to weakness, imperfection, and failure in your life?
Child of God, Paul saw His weaknesses as opportunities for God’s grace to flow through him. He perceived these situations as opportunities to witness and experience the faithfulness, goodness, and tenderness of God first hand. These weaknesses, failures, and difficulties are opportunities for all of us to step into new levels in our relationship with God!
When the Lord said to Paul that His grace was “sufficient,” He was saying that His grace will always be a source of strength and ability, like a spring that will never run dry. The word for “sufficient” is the word ἀρκέω (arkeo), and it literally means to be or to have adequacy to the point of satisfaction. This word is a verb in the present tense, which means that to have sufficiency in the Lord’s grace is a certain and steady action continuously carried out by Christ Himself, and causes the object of that grace to become one who is supplied with an unfailing strength, ability, or adequacy.
In other words, to have sufficiency in the grace of Christ is to have an endless well of divine ability constantly flowing in you, through you, and operating on your behalf. It is literally Christ Himself at work in you and with you, Father and son, hand in hand, His strength and your participation. Your part in this is to simply let go of striving and latch on to Him, walking in agreement with Him, and allowing His grace to meet your weaknesses!
When we see His grace in our weaknesses we actually encounter His nature! We experience His care in our lives and what was once a theological belief, a line in a song, a riveting illustration in a book becomes tangible. The result is that our roots deepen, and our hearts are elated! The relationship goes to a new level because we catch a glimpse of who He is for us personally, and this draws us in deeper and deeper.
My point here is that weakness and failure in our lives should cause us to burst with excitement because these are the areas where we are about to witness God in action in our lives! These are the areas where we will have a tangible experience of His nature, and thus we will be drawn deeper and deeper into the depths of His all consuming love!
Child of God, where are you weak? Where are you failing? Get with God and discuss these areas with Him, ask Him what He is saying about them, and listen to His tender whisper. The life of a Christian is an experience of true rest, where God takes His place as Father and we rest nestled in His loving arms as His dear little babes!
