Captivated By Christ
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
Beloved, darkness lurks about seeking to incapacitate the sons of light by whispering lies into their ears. “You’re not good enough!” they say, “Nobody cares.” “You are ashamed of Jesus, you are a coward!” “You always sin, God can never forgive you!” These are the weapons of the enemy forged in the fires of deception and handcrafted to cause confusion, shame, bitterness, and above all else self-hatred in order to infect the children of light and bind them up, so the sons of God will cease to pour forth the brilliance of the indwelling Christ on a sick and thirsty world.
Deception is the murderous tool of satan. Satan’s goal is to force us to identify with our frailty, our past, our failures, and our weaknesses. He seeks to pull our gaze from the splendor of the risen Christ and fix our eyes upon ourselves. The devil always points us to our inability, attempting to disqualify us, and cause us to shrink back.
But Paul encourages us that we have been equipped with weaponry that decimates the fortifications of the enemy. These weapons are found in Christ, and in bringing every thought into the obedience of Christ Himself. The word obedience in this verse is presented as a quality of Christ Himself, and thus we are told to deflect the whispers of darkness by our identification with Christ and His finished work! So the next time you hear a thought, sense an impression, or experience an emotion that is contrary to the nature of God and seeks to disqualify you and incapacitate you, look to Jesus and His obedience on your behalf! For Christ is your life, your holiness, your righteousness, and your redemption (Col 3:3; 1 Cor 1:30-31).
It is God who has qualified you, and the Spirit who sustains and compels you, and Christ who is your source! You stand before God as a precious and dear child of His not because of your obedience, but because of Christ’s obedience and what it has won for you (Rom 5:19)! Remember beloved we are to look to Christ who is the author and finisher of our faith and not to ourselves or our qualifications, because we have none that would merit the grace and blessings that are ours in Christ.
Take every thought captive to Christ’s obedience, what He has done, and who He is as your life. When the devil brings up your sin, confess that Christ is your righteousness, and your holiness! When the devil points to your inability, confess that Christ is your ability and His grace is more than sufficient for you! When the devil attempts to cover you in shame, remember that you have been clothed with Christ, and righteousness is your portion!
Beloved it is time for us as the church to disarm the devil and expose his deception by holding fast to Christ and the truth of what He has done, and who He is that sets us free! Learn to discern the voice of the enemy, and respond to it by confessing Christ and His obedience on your behalf! Christ is your life, the one who sustains, animates and motivates you, don’t buy into the lie that it is up to you! He is your faithful Father, and He alone is responsible for you in every aspect of your wellbeing!
