Thoughts on Fulfillment
Fulfillment is the state or quality of completion or realization. For most of us, fulfillment is a verbal representation of the desire or longing in our heart to be satisfied. Some embark on the journey for fulfillment pursuing peace, searching high and low, finding only glimpses and vaporous moments of this elusive phantom. Others seek fulfillment through their careers looking more for a sense of purpose and a sense of identity, mingled with the hope of securing within themselves some value or worth. One may desire fulfillment in the realm of relationships, firmly believing that if their soul could cling to another in love that maybe, just maybe, the hungry void within their heart would be stopped up for good.
Every human heart knows the sensation of emptiness slowly swallowing them from the inside, compelling them to reach out in desperation for that nagging something that will final make them whole. Fulfillment is a state of completion and realization, an inner soundness that unifies our inner world. This deep yearning echoing from within, has a way of highlighting other wants or needs that seem to be keeping us from that blessed soundness. In our longing for fulfillment we recognize that we are also in search of identity, peace, and relational connection. We quickly understand that this deep inner groaning will not be satisfied by superficial gratifiers. Our need penetrates far deeper than we know.
Why is it that every human heart seems to intuitively desire this state or condition that is obviously contingent upon something outside of ourselves? Why does it seem that this yearning is leading us on a journey in pursuit of something that is so elusive, especially when the hunger feels so ferocious?
All of these peripheral wants that this deep yearning for fulfillment dredge up, as well as the hunger itself, can indeed be fully realized and experienced. Though the solution for our incessant yearning is often repulsive and offensive to our rebellious hearts. The truth is we were indeed created to find this fulfillment through becoming personally and intimately acquainted with the heart that formed us. It is there, in the warm embrace of our loving Father that this hunger is satisfied. For Christ Himself described this yearning and its constant hunger when He said, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty" (Jn 6:35).
We were designed to seek out and find that component that would unify our inner world, and that component comes with it a longing for identity (who am I?), peace (mental and emotional soundness), and relational connection (authentic intimacy). Fulfillment lies in the compassionate gaze of God, as He looks down upon us in all tenderness and affection. For it is He alone who can reveal to us our true identity, accepting and embracing every aspect of our being, and helping us to truly believe who we are and what we are worth. Only His love can guarantee our soundness and wholeness, for it is He alone who knows the complexity of our mental world. It is only through union with Him that our heart will ever truly be satisfied with the depth of intimacy and nearness that our souls desperately crave.
Your heart is constantly calling out to Him, seek Him, and you will experience the fulfillment you have been longing for! Test me on this.
